More than 140,000 firms have applied to the Government’s furlough scheme in the first day. Rishi Sunak, speaking at today’s Government coronavirus briefing, revealed that by 4pm today, more than a million people’s wages were set to be protected under their furlough initiative – where up to 80% of wages are being reimbursed to firms struggling with the coronavirus pandemic. He said: “A month ago I stood a this lecturn and said we would step in and help to pay people’s wages. “More than a million people would have been at risk of losing their jobs. “I’d like to put on record my thanks to thousands of staff that have made this happen. People have come out of retirment and worked around the clock, in their bedrooms and on their kitchen tables, to get this system up and running.” He added: “Firms applying today should receive their cash in six working days. HMRC will continue to provide updates on the number of people furloughed.” Mr Sunak said the goal of the new schemes was to maintain “our economy’s productive capacity so that we can bridge through this crisis”. “That is what we have done,” he told the press conference. Chancellor Rishi Sunak also said the Government would “pursue every possible option” to secure personal protective equipment (PPE) for the UK. With the Government under fire over a lack of crucial items of PPE, Mr Sunak said: “This is an international challenge that many other countries are experiencing. “Alongside the efforts of British businesses, and our embassies around the world, we are working hard to get the PPE our frontline NHS and social care staff need.” He insisted there were regular shipments despite the “unexpected delays” to the consignment from Turkey. “Today we unloaded a shipment of 140,000 gowns from Myanmar,” he said. “We are, of course, continuing to pursue every possible option for PPE procurement.” Some 21,626 people in England, Wales and Scotland were tested for coronavirus in the 24 hours up to 9am on Sunday, Downing Street said. Testing capacity dipped to 36,000 – from 38,000 last week – over the same 24-hour period, but the PM’s official spokesman said this was due to commercial laboratories implementing new processes. “That’s not a permanent dip,” the spokesman said. More than 88,000 NHS and social care staff and their relatives have now been tested. The spokesman added that the Government believes it is “on course” to meet the target of 100,000 tests a day by the end of the month. Meanwhile, the Duke of Edinburgh has made a rare public statement, praising those tackling the coronavirus pandemic across the UK and keeping essential services running. Read MorePhilip, 98, who retired from public duties in 2017, said he wanted to recognise the “vital and urgent” medical and scientific work taking place. In his message, the duke also gave thanks to key workers including those involved in food production and distribution, refuse collection and postal and delivery services. And the Government has confirmed it is looking into having a one-minute silence for NHS workers who have lost their lives on the front line of the coronavirus struggle. It follows a campaign by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to recognise the sacrifice health workers have made during the pandemic. from https://taxi.nearme.host/more-than-a-million-workers-on-furlough-reveals-government-leicestershire-live/
