Bulldozers wasted no time in getting back to work demolishing a village pub when lockdown restrictions were lifted. Construction vehicles at the Tom Thumb, Blaby, went untouched for weeks after lockdown measures were introduced at the end of March, but shortly after some restrictions were relaxed, work was back underway. The old Everards inn, in Grove Road, is being knocked down to make way for 10 new homes. Blaby District Council authorised plans for six detached homes and four semi-detached properties on the site last year. Work started before the Covid-19 pandemic but halted. The demolition was then due to re-start when restrictions were introduced, halting work again. Five of the properties will be built looking out onto The Fairway, four will front onto Grove Road and the remaining home will stand on a corner plot. The application also states that there will be 26 parking spaces as part of the development. Speaking to LeicestershireLive when the application was submitted, an Everards spokesman said: “All Everards pubs are run as independent tenanted businesses. For some time the Tom Thumb had been a challenging pub to operate and it has struggled to be viable for an independent business owner due to its size, the cost of operating the business in terms of staffing, utilities etc. and with fierce completion, changing social habits and the economic climate also contributing to the pub’s decline. “Everards is passionate about and committed to pubs, investing in and supporting business owners to run successful, individual and profitable pubs throughout the East Midlands. “Since 2007, when lots of pubs have been closing we have been acquiring pubs, many of which were either closed or viewed as unsustainable. There are instances however when the location, competition or sheer size of the pub does not make it sustainable for the future and in these cases we seek alternative uses for the property, enabling us to continue to focus on developing sustainable pubs for the long term.” from https://taxi.nearme.host/bulldozers-return-to-demolish-village-pub-as-lockdown-measures-relaxed-leicestershire-live/

I know some people are worried that reducing limitations on travel and workout will bring visitors back into the county from other areas at a time when a number of our homeowners are still extremely vulnerable to the virus.” Tourism is a big part of our regional economy. Nevertheless, local visitor destinations, such as Rutland Water, remain closed, together with cafes, pubs, dining establishments and stores in both our market towns.” We have a big population of older locals for whom Covid-19 is a much higher risk. We might also do without a sharp increase in traffic on rural roads at a time when emergency situation services remain badly extended.” All told, I believe we have to be sincere and say that Rutland is not prepared to welcome visitors back simply yet. “The plea follows a message from Lincolnshire the other day. from https://taxi.nearme.host/rutland-issues-stay-away-warning-to-potential-visitors-as-coronavirus-lockdown-starts-to-ease-leicestershire-live/ A Bath woman who has been confronting cyclists riding on pavements has been criticised for her “ill-informed” views and for failing to abide by social distancing guidelines. Last month Julie Trollope wrote to the Bath Chronicle saying she felt the police should act against the “menace” of cyclists riding on pavements during the coronavirus lockdown. “Do these people not know the rules for cyclists which state, ‘You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement’?” she asked. “What could be clearer than that? She was subsequently photographed stopping cyclists and telling them to stop riding on pavements. Adam Reynolds, chairman of Walk Ride Bath, has written to the newspaper in response pointing out that according to the National Police Chiefs’ Council guidance, “considerate” cyclists can in fact ride on the pavement. She has been labelled as ‘ill-informed’https://t.co/soH2KVXTSe — Somerset Live (@SomersetLive) May 13, 2020 “Chief police officers, who are responsible for enforcement, acknowledge that many cyclists, particularly children and young people, are afraid to cycle on the road, so sensitivity and careful use of police discretion is required’.” He added: “This police discretion is applied across multiple aspects of road use, for example, breaking the speed limit is illegal, but by discretion, a fine with points is not issued until a certain level of speeding has occurred, not when you exceed the speed limit by 1 mile. “Considerate cycling on pavements is similarly allowed through the discretion of the police.” He continued: “It is with some concern that Bath Chronicle’s Richard Mills felt the need to follow Julie Trollope’s letter by writing two articles on her behaviour while she was ‘papped’ by a photographer, showing her getting in the face of people cycling on pavements during a strict lockdown where 2m social distancing should be adhered to.” He finished by pointing out that despite the apparent emptiness of the roads, there were still very obvious dangers. “A final point that needs to be made, that despite how empty the roads may appear, all this has done is make drivers more reckless with some areas of the country reporting an 8 fold increase in speeding. “In fact the number of cyclists that have died on our roads involving collisions with drivers is 12 during lockdown, when it was only 6 for the same period last year.” Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. With the lockdown eased today, Bradgate Park opened this morning for the first time since March. People who had been missing the chance to walk in the country park took the opportunity to return but they managed to keep their distance. LeicestershireLive’s Andy Baker went along to take these photographs and said it was not as busy as he had been expecting. He said: “It was very quiet. I went along this morning at about 9am and there were just a few people wandering in. “I went back at 2pm and it was still very, very quiet. “You could tell straight away from the car park, which was only a quarter full. “It’s obviously a big park so it was very sparsely populated with people able to keep their distance without any problems. “I don’t think there was any risk for people there and signs were everywhere reminding people to practice social distancing. “The toilet block was open but they were enforcing a one-in-one-out system.” The Bradgate Park Trust had asked people to stay socially distanced if they arrived at the park and found it was clearly busy. The trust said in a Facebook post yesterday: “The trust can confirm that the trustees have agreed the re-opening proposals as of tomorrow, Wednesday May 13 for Bradgate Park and Swithland Wood. The signs said: “Do not visit this park if you have any Covid-19 symptoms – fever, cough or shortness of breath. “Observe social distancing, staying at least two metres apart from other people. “Use all areas of the park, not just the main carriageway, so you can maintain an appropriate distance from others. “Avoid touching surfaces, such as gates or handrails and you mouth and face.
