The design for the first driverless cars to be tested on the streets of London has been revealed. The consortium behind the trial has decided to adapt electric passenger shuttles that are currently in service at Heathrow Airport for use in Greenwich. Unlike the Heathrow pods, they will not need dedicated tracks. The Greenwich trial is one of four in the UK to test driverless technology and public reaction to it. Apart from the Gateway (Greenwich Automated Transport Environment), the other trials will take place in Bristol, Coventry and Milton Keynes. The 8m project is jointly funded by government agency Innovate UK and industry. Seven of the pods will be tested on the pavements around the Greenwich Peninsula, where the 02 Arena is based, from July. Routes are still being worked out but are likely to include residential areas, the North Greenwich tube station and businesses around the O2. The design is different from the one shown off at the launch of the scheme, when a shuttle vehicle designed by autonomous vehicle firm Phoenix Wings was demonstrated. "That was perfect for the demonstration and we did consider using it but we had a procurement process and chose the design we have now," Prof Nick Reed, technical director for the Gateway project, told the BBC. "This vehicle has millions of miles under its belt and now we have to take it outside of the track and modify it for use on pavements," he added. The so-called UltraPODs currently in service at Heathrow carry passengers between the car park and Terminal 5. In the five years they have been in use, they have carried 1.5 million passengers and travelled three million kilometres (1.8 million miles). Westfield Sportscars, a British carmaker, will be responsible for manufacturing and testing of the pods. Heathrow Enterprise will design the software while a third British firm, Oxbotica, will provide mapping and other sensors to ensure the vehicles are safe. The pods will have three months of testing, first with invited users and then with the general public. Each pod can carry six passengers but will require a steward to be present at all times to press the emergency button in the case of a problem. The trial of the pods will reveal a wealth of data, said Prof Reed. "It will tell us whether people trust and accept these vehicles and how they would work as part of the urban landscape," he said. The government wants to become a world leader in the area of driverless car technology. Australians like the idea of driverless cars, but first they want to take a look under the hood. Preliminary results from a national study undertaken by the Australian Driverless Vehicle Initiative (ADVI) suggest Australians are fairly keen to give up the steering wheel. The survey of more than 5,000 Australians over the age of 18 found that a majority liked the idea of using a driverless vehicle when they were tired, when driving was "boring or monotonous," or if they had consumed alcohol or drugs. Despite the enthusiasm, Michael Regan, chief scientist at the Australian Road Research Board, who oversaw the survey, told Mashable that respondents had reservations ranging from security to financial liability. "The big thing people are concerned about is vehicle security," he said. "Seventy-nine percent of the sample were worried about vehicle security, like hacking. Seventy-two percent were worried about data privacy." While people were willing to get into the car themselves, they still baulked when it came to children. "Concerns about a child riding in a self driving car by themselves that's the biggest concern of all," he said. "Ninety percent of people were concerned or very concerned about allowing a child to be in the car by themselves." Further, only 25 percent said they'd use a driverless car to pick up their kids. Regan chalked those numbers up to a lack of trust in the technology: "When we ask them safety questions do you think a driverless car will be safer than a car driven by a human? only 47 percent of people said a driverless car would be safer." Just who would be responsible for an accident was another big issue for those sampled, and one the insurance industry is beginning to grapple with.
There were also mixed responses about some key functions of driverless car technology attitudes that could potentially be fixed with greater exposure to its functionality. Respondents were most comfortable with driving cars that stayed in a lane by themselves or maintained a speed, he pointed out, but they were least comfortable with cars following other cars closely or autonomously changing lanes. "It's sort of understandable, because people aren't used to being in a car following another car closer than normal," he said. "One of the mechanisms by which we can decrease congestion and improve traffic flow is to allow driverless cars to drive closely." Despite the concerns, a significant number of those sampled were willing to pay big bucks for a driverless car. Almost 40 percent of respondents were happy to pay more for a fully-automated vehicle than their current car. Of those willing to pay more, they would hand over A$8,977 on average more than their current car. "I was quite surprised that even though so few people had ever driven a car with any automated function, less than 10 percent, almost 40 percent are willing to pay quite a bit of money," Regan added. Still, people fancy themselves behind the wheel. "A really interesting finding that I wasn't expecting was 83 percent of people said they'd like to drive manually from time to time," he said. "That's a big message, I think, to car manufacturers that people aren't ready to give up driving just yet." The full report should be available early 2017. Read more:

The last Peugeot to be made at the company's Coventry plant rolled off the production line 10 years ago. It could have been the death knell for the city's automotive industry, but new technology is inspiring confidence once more in the UK's "motor city". Ten years ago the mood in Coventry was sombre, certainly at the Peugeot plant, near Ryton, where production was ending. Jim O'Boyle, union convenor and Peugeot worker for 20 years, said he watched the last vehicle coming off the track (production line). "They were ripping up the track just behind it as the last car came off. It was terrible," he said. These days he is the cabinet member for jobs and regeneration at the city council: "When I joined (Peugeot) I couldn't imagine ever doing anything else. "Now I can't believe I was ever there." Coventry's automotive heritage:
Twenty-three years ago the RDM Group, on Humber Road, near Ryton, had a plant harnessing component parts for firms such as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Now its employees, 80% of whom are engineers, are at the forefront of 21st Century engineering and design - one project, for example, involves creating software to enable cars to park themselves in garages. The company is currently waiting for the council to agree to a trial, which the government is paying 20m towards, for autonomous vehicles in the city. Smaller trials have already been held down the M1 in Milton Keynes. "We are looking at how the cars communicate with the pods. For example, you could be travelling along in your Land Rover towards the city centre," marketing director Miles Garner said. "The computer in the car will communicate with a pod. It will tell the pod it has two guests to pick up - and then your last half mile or so of the journey will be in the pods." Humber Road, as the name suggests, is the site where the Rootes Group once produced its Humber car. "It's nice to be leading these technical drives where all the old car manufacturing used to be," he said. Not all the old car sites are still being used in the automotive trade. Browns Lane, once home to Jaguar and Daimler and where car production ended in 2004, two years before Ryton closed, is due to become a 24-hour distribution centre for Amazon. The former Peugeot plant was demolished and the site is now home to various companies and warehouses. Meanwhile JLR is expected to push ahead with its expansion into electric vehicles with a planned "global centre of excellence" for battery research. Its Whitley site, two and half miles out of the city and the firm's global headquarters, is already earmarked for expansion but it is expected to need more space, with sites around the city's airport, in Baginton, being looked at. Last month chief executive Dr Ralf Speth laid out a vision which could see 10,000 new jobs created in the West Midlands. Already the largest carmaker by volume, JLR would like to double production from 500,000 to one million cars a year. The firm is expected to be working with Warwick Manufacturing Group, which is part of Warwick University, on the edge of the city. Mr O'Boyle thinks this could bring manufacturing back to Coventry. "The biggest change is the type of vehicles. Clean-air vehicles and electronic cars, that is a massive opportunity," he said. "But we need new expertise and we are working with the Warwick Manufacturing Group and Warwick University to get that - that's where the future lies. "Once the prototype is in place, you get your product in the showrooms, make them affordable and then you need the workforce to build them. "Jaguar wants to do it in Coventry. We just need the infrastructure in place." Top ten employers in Coventry - 2011. The firm has outgrown its Holyhead Road premises in the city, where it started life in the 1920s producing car bodies for Jaguar, Rolls Royce and Bentley. It currently employs more than 400 full-time people and company president Peter Johansen says that could go up to 1,600 if a third shift is introduced to produce the cabs. The firm hopes to have the capacity to produce 36,000 vehicles. In his opinion, Coventry is still the UK's motoring centre, albeit with a larger surrounding area. "I would actually say Coventry still eclipses all of the country - although you would include the wider area with Birmingham and firms south of Coventry into Warwickshire and along the M40 corridor," he said. He cited firms such as Ricardo in Leamington Spa, Pro-Drive in Banbury, Aston Martin and other research and development firms in Gaydon plus the Warwick Manufacturing Group, as all contributing heavily to the progress in the automotive industry. Penso, employing more than 200 people and which has been based at the airport for 12 years, focuses on design and engineering solutions for the automotive industry. With the Renewable Energy Directive in mind (all EU countries must ensure 10% of transport fuels be renewable by 2020) it works with new technology to reduce waste. In Coventry Penso has a huge press making carbon fibre components and is notable that it, along with LTC, are the two firms producing London's black cabs (which are also sold all over the world). The city council's crest features a phoenix rising out of the flames and represents the new Coventry rising out of the old (the city was heavily damaged by German bombers in November 1940). The motto is apt for the city's industry, sales director Michael Collins said. "Out of adversity comes dynamic change. It was sad when Ryton closed but I think such things drive innovation." The city's universities, Coventry and Warwick, lead the way with industrial design and companies like Penso are taking on apprentices to help out with a skills shortage, he added. "When Ryton closed its doors that was the last of the car production in Coventry," Jim O'Boyle said. "And we had fought to keep it open. "But now we have the opportunity to skill up the workforce and I think it can be done pretty quickly. "Cov has the ability to bounce back. We have the high-end jobs, we need to look at getting the semi-skilled. "I can see Coventry doing very well." Were not saying theres anything wrong with it. Weve already cried over summer ending, discussed everything we love about fall, and were ready to take on everything the season has to offer in full force. But as much as we pretty much agree on the best parts of fall, we all have our one favorite. Lets determine what your go-to fall staple says about you. The FashionYou spend all season decked out in fur and leather and your vegan friends hate you for it. Whether youre shopping for knit beanies that bring out your hipster side or buying huge snakeskin totes that make you look petite AF in comparison, youre all about being trendy. You own enough scarves to avoid any repetition and you dont even care if they keep you warm. In fact, your outfit looks so effortless, no one even knows you spent two hours studying outfits from the Paris Fashion Week Snapstory or sending options to your group chat. After all, you wouldnt buy those new mid-calf booties without asking your friends first if they look good on you first, right? The FootballIf you claim your favorite part of Fall is football season, we would like to officially call you out on your bullshit. If youre a betch thats currently following football, theres probably a reason for it, and were guessing your boyfriend asked you to join his fantasy football league. Lets be real: the only draft youre familiar with is the A/C bill you get yelled at for every month, but you decided to join to be supportive. Team spirit can be kinda cute, right? No- not right. All of a sudden, your Sunday brunches are replaced by hours of yelling and chicken wings. You may have been able to chug five beers in college, but we all know youre counting down the days until game days are just a distant memory and you dont have to re-wear the same jersey every fucking week. The PumpkinThe barista might roll her eyes at you and spell your name wrong, but youre living this season to the fullest when it comes to the most basic fall flavor. Whether youre into the lattes, the muffins, or the scented candles, you are even more basic than any Buzzfeed quiz has already told you. We forgive you, though. Embrace the pumpkin while you still can. Sooner or later it will be bikini season again and youll probably regret that pumpkin spice cupcake you ordered to enhance your latte pic. #Eatingfortheinsta has its consequences. The Halloween CostumeIf youre that girl who waits all year for the one night she can dress up in some overdone slutty costume and get a new cover pic out of it, we feel kind of sorry for you. Betches love a good Halloween party, but keep in mind, its not even halfway through October. Its a little obsessive to be planning every detail of your costume, and this applies whether youre planning on being a bunny or some presidential candidate. This isnt the time to try out your new academic side and everyone knows politics and cleavage dont mix. Get too carried away and the scariest part of your Halloween will be the amount of candy bars you pounded in the Uber ride on your way home at 3AM. Trick or treat. Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick rang up Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk last year to propose a partnership on self-driving cars, according to an upcoming book. The discussion came after Apple Inc. invested $1 billion in Didi Chuxing, then a fierce competitor of Uber in China. Kalanick pitched Musk on teaming up against Apple, according to , a book by magazines Adam Lashinsky scheduled for release next week. “I said, Look man, we should partner,” Kalanick recalled in the book. “Elon spent the rest of the call convincing me that its too far out, and its not realistic, that I should just stick to what we do best and be focused, or Im going to f--- it all up. Thats when I knew Tesla was competing.” At the time, Tesla was rolling out the semi-autonomous driving system Autopilot to its vehicles, and work was already underway within Uber on its own self-driving technology. As Musk was playing coy with Kalanick, one of the Uber CEOs top deputies learned from a Tesla executive that autonomous cars were a top priority for the carmaker, Kalanick said in the book. Days after the call, Musk put out a 10-year plan for Tesla. The 1,500-word manifesto, published in July, included a proposal for an Uber-like ride-hailing service allowing Tesla owners to make money by renting out their robocars. A person close to Musk said he declined the partnership offer by Kalanick but that he didnt attempt to dissuade the Uber CEO from working on self-driving cars. Spokesmen for Tesla and Uber declined to comment. Uber works with Daimler AG and Volvo on self-driving cars, but Kalanick has long expressed admiration for Tesla. Steve Jurvetson, an investor in the automaker, said in 2015 that Kalanick wanted to buy 500,000 Teslas if they were fully autonomous by 2020. Uber has since given up the battle with Apple in China by selling its business there to Didi. As Uber has been mired in crises this year, senior management and investors have begun to look at Tesla with envy. Musk has gotten relatively little pushback for his associations with President Donald Trump, while Kalanick faced a boycott. Another scandal at Uber involves its self-driving car program. Its trying to fend off a lawsuit from Alphabet Inc. saying Ubers project benefited from stolen trade secrets. Uber denies the claim. Alphabet said this week its working with Lyft Inc., the main rival to Uber in the U.S., to test autonomous cars on the road. The turmoil at Uber makes an initial public offering in the near term unlikely. It hasnt stopped Kalanick from toying with the possibilities. In , he and his top dealmaker, Emil Michael, float various unconventional strategies for taking the company public in a conversation with the author. The book frames the discussion as one that shouldnt be taken too seriously. On a private jet last summer, Kalanick said Uber may not need investment bankers to go public, according to the book. Michael, who has overseen much of Ubers fundraising efforts in recent years, said the company could instead conduct a reverse merger, in which Uber would buy a public company in order to list its shares on the market. Kalanick offered another idea: Instead of paying bankers 3 percent of the money raised, the company could donate the fees to charity. Uber is unlikely to puruse these avenues, a person familiar with the matter said.
