After a series of setbacks and delays to their 20/21 season, Notts County could be forgiven for being slow on the uptake in their ‘soft’ Conference restart against FC Halifax Town in a match that proved that a quantity of poorer chances can still overturn a number of quality ones. Town, languishing in the relegation zone, laid siege to the Notts penalty area, but the Magpies were able to respond with a few clinical chances that almost turned out to be worth their weight in gold in comparison to the sheer amount of Halifax chances. However, it was the best chance of the match finished well by the home side that truly defined the game. The first half switched quickly between the two teams, with the Magpies striking early to take advantage of the early state of the match. Both teams were slow to adapt to each other’s game, but Notts found opportunity early on before offering Halifax their chance to play their own game in the first half. That chance offered up by the away team was not at all capitalised on. Neal Ardley’s men didn’t waste time in turning the tables on a complacent Halifax defence. It seemed all too easy for Jake Reeves to step up into the final third to play in Elisha Sam with the simplest of through-balls, and Reeves’ routine pass was dispatched with ease by the forward to send Notts into the lead. Some of the more expansive play from Notts fell apart with quick touches and flourishes – one oddly ending when Michael Doyle was caught out by the rapid hijinks of his own team, falling to the floor to allow Halifax a chance on goal. The Magpies soon learned that lesson, and were far more patient in possession choosing to probe for a familiar through ball to a surging Sam or Wootton with speed reserved for the attack rather than it’s build up, with the former acting as a particular live-wire. Halifax’s first true test of Sam Slocombe in goal was created by a sense of urgency from the Shaymen. After finding no success with early crosses into the box during the first twenty minutes, Halifax pinned their ambition to the floor with Notts forcing Jack Senior to embark on a midfield adventure resulting in a tame shot easily gathered by Slocombe in goal. Those frustrations boiled over for Halifax after another Notts effort, with a Magpies corner delayed due to a scuffle between Sam and Neill. The resulting corner fell wonderfully to Wootton, who could’ve scored if not for Enzio Boldewijn’s accidental block, with the winger caught out by his team-mates effort on goal. Senior forced a chance through sheer effort once more, with the corner following his own set-piece from Martin Woods earning Halifax a true scoring opportunity – Jamie Allan’s spinning effort from the corner did beat Slocombe, but not his safety valve in Connell Rawlinson who headed the volley away in the face of an open net. A Luke Summerfield free-kick arced over Slocombe’s crossbar shortly after. A period of required dominance became the order of the day for the hosts, who were denied clear scoring chances twice by the Magpies defence. A back-post header from Kieran Green saw Jake Hyde lunge across Slocombe to strike – a goal if not for the efforts of Richard Brindley who threw himself into the scoring avenue. When Brindley (who required a short spell of medical attention after his block) wasn’t able to save the Magpies, Slocombe was with the goalkeeper swooping low and quick with his legs to deny Green an equaliser from close-range in the dying seconds of the first-half. From range, Summerfield was denied by Slocombe in the opening of the second-half, and before that Green once more. Hyde was also stopped, but not by anyone of a Notts persuasion – but by his own touch which took it past himself and into the caressing feet of Rawlinson who dealt the ball away. A relaxed away side emerged against a frustrated Halifax in the final forty-five minutes, with the game nebulising into routine – one where the home side probed only to be denied. Notts stood tall with blocks, tackles, saves and calm, contained defending that carefully toed the line between standing tall in the face of searing pressure or being completely and utterly overwhelmed. In hindsight, a true shame with the heartbreak to come. The visitors remained seemingly venomous though, and a rare Notts shot threatened to double their lead as Reeves raced into the final third to fire off a hammering effort at the top corner being denied – barely – by the palms of Sam Johnson in the home goal as the ball spun towards the inside of the far post. Notts forced another quality chance through Reeves again, with lively substitute Cal Roberts disastrously shunting the ball wide in a 1-on-1. Halifax’s firing on goal jammed as well – with their own change Gevaro Nepomuceno firing wide under pressure after being played into the penalty spot. Rawlinson was the next to shy away from scoring, seemingly refusing to throw himself at a chance in the face of Johnson’s goal to add the second goal the match seemed to promise. That would be coming, though. All it took for Halifax to finally equalise was a chance firmly in the style of Notts – with a short corner punished by a long ball. Allen’s relentless pursuit of the pass ended in the game falling level in the dying seconds. Allen raced through on goal, shrugged off a rough challenge and homed in a shot under Slocombe to end the game. Two moments of complacency bookended the game, and for all of Notts’ efforts at the back, it all came down to a failure at the other end of the pitch. The few chances for the Magpies could – and should – have given the away side a valuable three points. It was not to be, and Ardley will now be left to ponder how his side can make the most of the valuable chances that they create, even if they are but few. Photos shared in social media show police arming themselves with rubber bullet guns, shields, helmets and gas masks. Protesters reportedly threw water bottles filled with blue paint and homemade smoke bombs at police which is believed to have triggered police to deploy the water cannon. In a press conference at the scene, an officer said water was used at first, but then officers laced the water with tear gas when the protesters continued to throw smoke bombs and paint at the officers. From a distance, red and blue smoke was seen clouding the area around the riot truck as water was sprayed at protesters. Police were heard yelling through megaphones telling the protesters to “stop throwing things at us… the police have no choice but to defend this position.” When the water appeared to run out, grey clouds of what is reportedly tear gas took over. Even police in riot gear had to retreat. People fleeing the area were heard coughing. Police are allowing Thai media to be in close proximity to the protest. While there are gates blocking the media from the protest, when there is a clash, the reporters and photographers step in. The truck’s water tank was refilled at around 3:45pm and an officer was seen pouring a liquid, possibly tear gas, into the tank. While hundreds and thousands gather at pro-democracy protests to call on government, constitutional and monarchy reform, Thai women’s rights activists attending the Bangkok rallies are raising awareness about sexual harassment and rape. The activists say they want to end the “victim blaming” culture where women are said to bring harassment and even rape upon themselves by dressing a certain way. There is a cross over with the Bad Student movement, which has also been demanding greater scrutiny on the sexual abuse of student by teachers and education officials, mostly “swept under the carpet”. At a recent protest, a group called “Women’s Freedom” and chanted “Sida Lui Faai,” a re-interpretation of the Chilean feminist group Las Tesis’s chant “Un Vialodor en Tu Camino,” meaning “A Rapist in Your Path.” The name Sida Lui Faai is taken from a chapter in Thailand’s national epic Ramakien where Sida walks through fire to prove her innocence to her husband. The activists danced on a large, rainbow flag, a symbol for LGBTQ rights, and chanted in Thai: “We were judged since we were born. We were abused by the patriarchy. This system is exploiting us. It’s violence you don’t bother to see.” Activist Chumaporn Taengkleang says that women in Thai society have been taught by Thai literature, but the female characters in the stories are not treated equally. She refers back to the story about Sida, saying that Sida did not do anything wrong and there was no reason for her to walk in the fire. Compared with today’s culture, she says “why must women take all the blame when they are victims of sexual harassment?” “This concept has been used repetitively against women… Today we are dancing to Sida Lui Faai, not to prove anyone’s innocence, but to say that all of us are living under this system, where rape still occurs in society.” SOURCE: Thai PBS Keep in contact with The Thaiger by following our Police in Bangkok say motorists and pedestrians should steer clear of routes around the Parliament today or risk heavy congestion and road closures. NASA will launch four astronauts aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule this weekend in the company’s first regular crew rotation to the orbiting lab. The trip, three months after SpaceX completed a high-profile trial run, will open a new era in human spaceflight for NASA as commercial firms start dominating U.S. missions in low-earth orbit. “I hope people realize this isn’t just another launch — this is something a lot bigger,” Michael Hopkins, commander of the Crew-1 mission scheduled for Saturday, said in a NASA post on Tumblr. “Hopefully it’s setting the stage, one of those first steps to getting us to the Moon and on to Mars.” For Space Exploration Technologies and founder Elon Musk, the flight caps almost two decades of efforts to fly people as well as cargo. The Dragon and SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket won NASA approval for regular crewed missions this week, making them the first vehicles the U.S. has certified to carry humans since the Space Shuttle, which was retired in 2011. The Crew-1 launch is scheduled to blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 7:49 p.m. on Saturday, with docking at the station planned eight and a half hours later. If that attempt is scrapped, a backup launch would be set for 7:27 p.m. on Sunday with docking 27 hours later due to orbital mechanics. Beyond becoming the U.S. space agency’s first regular commercial launch, the Crew-1 mission is also the first NASA-staffed mission licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration. The regulator is assuming responsibility for public safety because the flight will be conducted by a commercial company. NASA on Friday was checking on Musk’s recent contacts with agency personnel after he tweeted late Thursday that he might be infected with the new coronavirus. His health isn’t likely to affect the launch, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said at a news conference. Astronauts self-quarantine for two weeks before liftoff. Hopkins, 51, an Air Force colonel and test pilot, will make his second sojourn to the space station, seven years after his first. He will be joined by three others on the mission: The four astronauts will push the space station to maximum occupancy when they join the three people already there. That will require changes in how mission controllers schedule the daily exercise regimen for each crew member. There will also be a squeeze on personal quarters where the astronauts sleep and have time to themselves. The space station currently has a half-dozen crew berths, and NASA is completing work on a seventh. In the meantime, Hopkins will sleep aboard the Dragon capsule. If that doesn’t work out, a crew member could “camp out” in one of the space station’s modules, David Wiedmeyer, a training officer at Johnson Space Center, wrote Nov. 12 in a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session about the mission. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration began its commercial crew program in 2010 to field a replacement for the shuttle. NASA selected SpaceX and Boeing Co. in September 2014. Boeing, which suffered delays in its work following a botched December 2019 test flight, plans a second trial without crew in the first quarter of next year. SpaceX completed its test-flight program Aug. 2 when astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley returned from a two-month stay aboard the station. Since then, the company has bolstered parts of the Dragon’s heat shield, made adjustments so that the landing parachutes deploy at a slightly higher altitude and reinforced some areas of the capsule so it can withstand rougher seas. Three months ago, when Behnken and Hurley splashed down south of Pensacola, Florida, recreational boaters approached the spacecraft. When the crew of the latest mission returns in the spring of 2021, NASA has already announced one major change for the landing site: A larger flotilla of Coast Guard ships to keep pleasure craft away. from https://taxi.nearme.host/spacex-nasa-plan-second-commercial-taxi-to-the-space-station-this-weekend/ What to do if a block of frozen urine falls from a plane on to your house Leicestershire Live11/19/2020 It’s more important than ever to stay informed – Get free LeicestershireLive alerts direct to your inbox

‘Blue ice’ is the term given to human waste material that escapes from a travelling plane and plummets towards the ground. Modern passenger aircraft are all designed to hold sewage so that it can all be offloaded after it has landed, so anyone who suspects the contents of a toilet are jettisoned from a plane thousands of feet off the ground can be assured it’s just an urban myth. However sometimes things do go wrong – and the stored sewage escapes the aircraft. And there have been some cases. Just ask Andy and Gaynor Swann who were living in Stocking farm in 2007. Andy and Gaynor were in their garden in 2006 when an 18 inch-wide block of frozen urine crashed on to their roof – just 4ft from where Andy stood. At the time, Andy said: “There was a big bang and it hit the ridge tiles on the roof, then the patio. “It would have killed me if it had hit me, without a doubt.” The lump of blue ice caused hundreds of pounds of damage to their roof, scattering tiles on to the patio below. “It looks like frozen wee. I would think it’s chemically treated, but when it thawed out on the patio it didn’t smell very pleasant. “I find it’s quite funny now, but on Saturday I was angry to say the least.” ‘It’s too scary to think about’A similar incident occurred outside the Great Glen home Stephanie Cole who was stunned when she saw a dent in the front of her black Smart car, caused by a fallen ball of ice. The ice ball, which fell from an aeroplane, ricocheted off of her vehicle before it landed on her gravel driveway. “It was a massive lump and could have hit someone walking past my house and killed them. It’s too scary to think about,” she said. In both cases, neither parties were compensated and had to fork out hundreds of pounds to repair the damage. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) displays information on its website as to why this sometimes happens. Within that information, it says: “Some ice falls may occur because ice which has naturally formed on an aircraft at higher altitudes breaks off as it descends into warmer air. “We have also received reports of discoloured ice which may carry an odour. This could originate from a leak from a faulty seal on a lavatory hose socket at a servicing point on an aircraft, which is used to unload waste liquid when on the ground. “This is sometimes referred to as ‘blue ice’. “It should be noted that all lavatory waste is held within the aircraft and collected after landing by special vehicles during the preparation for the next flight. “If the ice is clear, it may have been due to a leak from the potable water system at an external servicing point. This system provides clean water to an aircraft’s galley and lavatory system. “A lot of assumptions can be made, but unfortunately it is impossible to trace a piece of fallen ice to a specific aircraft if indeed that was its origin.” Ultimately, the CAA says you should report any case of a random icefall to them. You can do so by clicking here. In some cases, some airports operate voluntary schemes under which they will repair any damage, so it may be worthwhile contacting your local airport. Otherwise, you should contact your insurance company in relation to any claim, says the CAA. Heathrow is one of the airports to run such a scheme. On their website, it says: “Heathrow operates a 24-hour telephone service for reporting ice fall damage. If you suspect your house has sustained a strike, you should report it immediately by calling our assessor on 07513 812808.” An inspection will be carried out of the damage before free repairs are carried out. Incidents like this are extremely rare with the number of incidents reported year to year rarely exceeding 25. from https://taxi.nearme.host/what-to-do-if-a-block-of-frozen-urine-falls-from-a-plane-on-to-your-house-leicestershire-live/ Sign up NOW for the latest Reds news and views direct to your inbox

Legendary goalkeeper Ray Clemence has died at the age of 72. The former Liverpool and Tottenham star won three European Cups, five Division One titles, two FA Cups and a League Cup, as well as 61 England caps. A statement released by his family read: “After fighting so hard, for such a long time, he’s now at peace and in no more pain. The family would like to say a huge thank you for the love and support he’s received over the years. “He was loved so much by us all and will never be forgotten.” Born in Skegness, Clemence started his career with Scunthorpe United before sealing a move to Liverpool in 1967, signed by Bill Shankly for £18,000. It would be an incredible 14 years at Anfield, racking up more than 450 appearances, as he also helped the club win two UEFA Super Cups among other major honours. He joined Spurs in 1981 and helped the club win the FA Cup, the FA Charity Shield and the UEFA Cup. Clemence also enjoyed no shortage of success on the international stage either, playing for England between 1972 and 1983. Liverpool said: “We’re deeply saddened by the passing of one of the greatest ever goalkeepers, Ray Clemence. “The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Ray’s family and many friends.” Following his retirement from playing, Clemence joined the coaching staff at Spurs, working his way through to the first-team, before leaving to become joint-manager of now non-league club Barnet. As well as achieving no shortage of accolades on the pitch during his career, both individually and collectively, Clemence was awarded an MBE for his services to football in the 1987 Birthday Honours. Clemence’s legacy in the game is not likely to ever be forgotten, with him having been compared to the likes of Lev Yashin, Peter Shilton and Gordon Banks. However, humble Clemence himself said, when Banks died last year: “He was a great man, a great human being, and probably… probably the world’s greatest goalkeeper. “I worked with him for two years when he was England goalkeeper and I was just part of the squad and it was an honour and an education for me.” The football world is this afternoon paying its respects. Ex-Liverpool defender Phil Thompson said: “So sorry to hear of the passing of Ray Clemence, my eyes and ears as a team mate – and oh what a keeper.” Jamie Carragher said: “A Liverpool Football Club giant who was also a giant of a man.” from https://taxi.nearme.host/tributes-flood-in-to-legendary-goalkeeper-ray-clemence-nottinghamshire-live/ The International Space Station is about to get more crowded. When it comes to property prices, a guide price of £24,000 to £29,000 is certainly on the ‘bargain’ list. This three-bed mid terrace in New Houghton, Mansfield, sits in this price bracket and is being auctioned on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at 9.00 am. Gurpreet Bassi, chief executive of Bond Wolfe Auctions, said the guide price for the house has been set at this level as the seller is looking for certainty of sale. Adding that it was a classic example of the kind of opportunity you can find in one of their six online live-streamed auctions every year. However, he said: “It will sell to the highest bidder above the reserve price on the auction day. “The reserve price is the minimum price a property can sell for and will be no higher than the top end of a bracket guide price. However, this year, due to exceptional demand and the popularity of our auctions, we have seen a number of properties sell for well in excess of the guide price. “It comes down to how much you want the property and, of course, your budget which we recommend you set prior to bidding.” The house in Portland Street does need a bit of TLC but includes a hall, two reception rooms, which are interconnected, a kitchen and, on the first floor, three bedrooms and a bathroom with WC. Outside there’ a rear yard. The walk around tour below gives you an idea of what is on offer at the property as well as its condition. Of course, if you’re interested in bidding you should view first hand and commission a surveyor’s report to fully understand what you’ll be taking on with the purchase. You can take a tour of the building here. The house currently has an Energy Performance Rating of D but with gas fired central heating and UPVC double glazing already in place, this could be improved after a programme of refurbishment and upgrading. The property auction will be live-streamed with remote bidding by proxy, telephone and internet only. Mr Bassi said: “We are experiencing a huge interest in our live-streamed auctions, with 603,152 website page views, 103,626 video tours watched and over 32,666 people tuning in to watch the 28 October auction live.” from https://taxi.nearme.host/inside-the-mansfield-terrace-you-could-snap-up-for-as-low-as-24000-nottinghamshire-live/ Things Get Uber-Awkward After Cheating Husband and Wife Accidentally Match Each Other On Tinder11/16/2020 These days it seems just about everyone has had some experience with online dating. While finding love via the internet isn’t easy, dating services such as Tinder gives people a chance to carefully screen potential dates to find only those they feel a connection to. Being single can sometimes be very lonely, and life is just more full if you have someone special in your life. However, things got rather crazy for one married couple after the husband matched a woman he knows very well on the popular dating app. You see, the woman he planned to cheat with was none other than his wife! The husband soon posted his story on Reddit, searching for a solution to this very awkward problem. He begins:
However, the man apparently felt lonely when he found himself alone for a month after his wife had gone on a business trip.
The man seemed clearly confused about using her account in the same city they lived in, considering she was supposed to be away on a business trip. Now, it could be, as he surmised, that someone is catfishing using her name and images — or it could be his wife; when it comes to the internet, just about anything’s possible. And just like the OP, other Redditors were equally confused. No matter how you figure it, this is just one mess of a situation. However, one comment seemed to hit the mark when it came to the OP’s “honest” intentions. Yeah, I’d say they may want to start shopping around for either a good marriage counselor or divorce attorneys. from https://taxi.nearme.host/things-get-uber-awkward-after-cheating-husband-and-wife-accidentally-match-each-other-on-tinder/ There is an enormous gap between rich and poor. The top 20 per cent of households own 90 per cent of the wealth, while the bottom 80 per cent only get 10 per cent. Many super rich give millions to charities and causes they favour, but their giving helps their tax deductions and doesn’t address the root causes of hunger, homelessness, joblessness and disease. Philanthropy means using riches to help the poor, but a lot goes to personal and political causes. The rich get richer and the poor lose. Barely a fifth of the money goes to the poor. Most philanthropy supports arts, sports teams and culture, and half goes to education and health care. The biggest donations go to elite education institutions the donors attended. Philanthropy does not spread wealth; it allows the super rich to express goodwill to their favourites. Their immense gifts undermine the priorities of democratically elected governments. In the WE controversy, the Canadian government tried be a philanthropist, using public money. The late German billionaire Peter Kramer called it transfer of power from democratically elected politicians to billionaires, so it is no longer “the state that determines what is good for the people, but rather the rich who decide who will eat.” Should the rich pay their fair share of taxes minus all the tax breaks ordinary taxpayers cannot access? The rich are favoured again where a large percentage of their gift is funded by the taxpayer. Tax breaks add taxpayer money to the causes chosen by the rich. Both Britain and the U.S. offer additional incentives for donations made to a charitable foundation. In England, incomes above £150,000 are taxed at 45 per cent. But gifts to registered charities are tax free. This enables a philanthropist to escape liability for tax on the donation, yet also control how the money is spent. The total cost to Britain of the various tax breaks to donors in 2012 was estimated at £3.64bn. The choices made by philanthropists reinforce social inequalities rather than reduce them. Therefore the money donated by philanthropists might be put to better use if it were collected as taxes and spent according to the priorities of a democratically elected government. Ending charitable tax deductions would provide billions for increased public spending for assisting both the poor and working poor. Philanthropy hasn’t reduced social and economic inequality. The powerful are more inclined to be generous than to grant social justice (Reinhold Niebuhr). How about ordinary folks like you and me? For every dollar Canadians donate to an eligible charity, they get about 20 to 25 cents in a tax refund. But this refund come through taxpayers and the charitable tax credit raises taxes. Just how much money is involved? In 2018, $6.1 billion in charitable credits. Research indicates that most of us give not for the tax break, but the “warm glow.” It’s time to abolish charitable deductions and stop giving more to the mega rich. But on the positive side, top quarterback Patrick Mahomes turned the Kansas City stadium into a polling place for the Nov. 3 election, spending a large sum of money to buy voting machines. He used his riches for good of others. England’s deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van-Tam is “hopeful” the UK can see “some sort of coronavirus vaccine by Christmas”. It comes following today’s announcement a Covid-19 vaccine has been developed by Pfizer (November 9). The pharmaceutical giant and its partner BioNTech said interim results showed their jab could prevent people developing coronavirus – with 90 per cent effiencency. Speaking during a briefing on Monday’s Covid-19 vaccine breakthrough, University of Nottingham’s Professor Van-Tam said: “Stand fast. Don’t get too overexcited about where we are. “We have seen the swallow but this is very much not the summer. It would be a colossal mistake to relax at this point.” The deputy CMO added age will be the biggest priority for any vaccine being given out. “I am hopeful we could see some sort of vaccine by Christmas,” he said. “More importantly it is good news for other vaccines to come.” Professor Van-Tam says we have to “battle through to the end” of the current second wave in the country. Making a football reference he said that “we haven’t won the cup yet”, but what it “does tell you is that the keeper can be beaten”. He added: “We don’t know what this means yet for when we can get life back to normal. “We are in the middle of the second wave and I don’t see the vaccine making any difference in the current wave. “We have to battle through the current wave to the end. “Please don’t relax much depends on how much you follow the rules. “But vaccines supplies we hope will come always subject to authorisation and we might be able to look to Spring as a much better horizon than we have now.” Speaking from 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the Government has not yet seen the full safety data and any findings will also need to be peer reviewed. Describing the development as a “significant hurdle”, the Prime Minister said there will still be many similar hurdles to overcome in the fight against the pandemic. Mr Johnson said the UK had ordered 30m doses of the Pfizer vaccine, which puts the country “at the front of the queue” when it comes to immunisation. Although he made clear, a number of checks had to made in what are “very, very early days” in the battle to rid the world of coronavirus. from https://taxi.nearme.host/deputy-chief-medical-officer-hopeful-of-covid-19-vaccine-by-christmas-nottinghamshire-live/ |
