There has been a breakout of Covid-19 among staff at a GP surgery, the NHS has confirmed. Brooklyn Medical Practice, in Mansfield Road, Heanor, has had multiple members of its administrative staff test positive for the virus. The NHS has in response said the practice shut itself to non-urgent calls on Saturday, January 30, and told people registered there it would only be dealing with “urgent clinical matters”, Derbyshire Live reports NHS Derby and Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which the surgery is part of, has said there is no risk to patients who do have to go into the surgery. In a statement released on Monday, February 1, a spokesperson for the CCG said the site had been deep cleaned and no one was seriously ill with Covid. “Staff at Brooklyn Medical Practice decided on Saturday to close the practice to non-urgent calls, due to an outbreak of Covid-19 among its administrative staff,” they said. “No booked appointments were affected and no clinical staff have tested positive. “Several administrative staff did return positive tests late in the week, including some who were asymptomatic. Thankfully, none of the staff who tested positive have developed serious symptoms. “The practice brought in a specialist team to conduct a thorough deep clean on Sunday, and no clinical staff have tested positive. Patients can be assured that attending booked appointments at the practice is safe.” The spokesperson added that although calls had been diverted to 111 on Monday, this was no longer the case on Tuesday, Feburary 2. “The decision has not affected any booked appointments at the GP surgery, but it did mean calls to the practice were diverted to NHS 111 on Monday,” he said. “Staff will be able to take calls again on Tuesday, and a neighbouring practice is also working with the team at Brooklyn to provide administrative support later this week. “Staff are doing their utmost to stay open to provide essential services for patients, despite the impact this has had. Staff are working incredibly hard to support the practice this week, at a time when everyone is already under pressure.” from https://taxi.nearme.host/covid-19-outbreak-confirmed-at-gp-surgery-nhs-confirms-nottinghamshire-live/

Neal Ardley confessed Wes Thomas’ departure from Notts County was best for all parties as he admitted he did not think the striker would play again for the Magpies this season. Thomas left the club on Monday after Notts “reluctantly accepted” his request to terminate his contract due to family reasons just several months before his current deal was due to expire. The forward’s departure came just weeks after Ardley revealed how the former Bournemouth forward had refused to train with the first-team squad due to his concerns over Covid. That had led Notts to create a bespoke fitness programme for Thomas in a bid to keep him fit in the hope he would return to action when he felt it was safe to do so. But an agreement was finally reached for the striker to make his exit and Ardley said it was the right move for both the player and the club. “It was one of those situations which was a difficult one,” he said. “It became apparent that it was not going to go away anytime soon and was just going to linger on. “We had to try and have a conversation in what was best for the lad, his family and the club. “I don’t think we would have seen Wes playing for this club again because the situation was not going to resolve itself before the end of the season. “There’s always an agreement that has to work for both parties. That’s for the people above, but it’s the right thing for both the player and the club.” Notts’ statement confirming Thomas’ departure read: “We have reluctantly accepted Wes Thomas’ request to terminate his contract. “The forward, who joined us in 2019, cited family reasons behind his decision and departs with our best wishes for the future.” Thomas played a key role in helping Notts finish third in the National League last season as his 12 goals helped them finish in the play-off positions. But he has made just four appearances for the club this term, but made an impression in the 3-1 win over Altrincham when he set up two goals for Kyle Wootton. However, his progress was halted when Covid ripped through the squad and then he suffered with a kidney stone. His last appearance for the club came in a 1-0 defeat at Aldershot in November. from https://taxi.nearme.host/notts-county-boss-neal-ardley-opens-up-on-wes-thomas-exit-nottinghamshire-live/

Approximately two hours before kick-off, a social media post from a Notts County fan underlined why football is providing much-needed respite from the coronavirus pandemic. “Looking forward to watching the Pies tonight,” he wrote. “Some welcome relief from the monotony of life in its current form. Have a feeling we will see a 4-1 win.” Adrian Rawden was eventually rewarded with the victory he wanted, but it was nowhere near the emphatic rout he had predicted to his followers. It was tense, it was hard fought and it was not until Kyle Wootton popped up with two late goals that Notts could celebrate moving back into the play-off positions. Notts’ victory over Solihull Moors was never a classic, but it at least gave the fans a welcome 90-minute breather from the bleak headlines surrounding Covid-19. “Football is keeping a lot of people sane,” said manager Neal Ardley afterwards. “It’s tough and there’s a lot of people including my own family who are struggling with everything that is happening. “I am living away from them during this period and I am struggling too. “If we can keep football going, and if it’s safe, then at least it’s something to look forward to on a Saturday afternoon or Tuesday night.” But for fans of Notts and National League sides up and down the country, the small pleasure of still being able to invest in their local team’s fortunes may yet be taken away from them. This week clubs will be asked whether they want to scrap the season after it emerged a that a critical finance package worth £11m to keep it going would be in loans instead of grants. Desperate attempts are being made to try to convince the government to change their stance, but they are so far unwilling to budge leaving the fate of the league mired in uncertainty. Clubs have already stressed they would not be able to commit to loans despite the generous interest rates, so the choices which remain are either to play on or make it null and void. With no cash coming in while games are being played behind closed doors and streaming not enough to pay the wage bills on its own, it is feared the latter will be the preferred option for those clubs whose financial resources are already at breaking point. And should the league become null and void, it is highly unlikely that points per game will be implemented given less than half the season has been played meaning promotion and relegation would be abandoned. That has left clubs like Torquay, who are top of the National League, and Notts, who also have ambitions of winning promotion, anxiously awaiting further news. For the time being the show goes on, but Ardley remains optimistic a solution can be found that will avoid three months of hard work being wiped out. “I get why teams aren’t happy with the funding but the National League needs to find a way to try to come through this,” he said. “At the moment our chief executive Jason Turner doesn’t seem worried and he thinks we’re going to be okay. “I don’t know the reasoning behind him not being worried, but I feel like there’s a lot of teams in our league who want to finish the season and want to find a way of doing that. “Whether it’s different in the leagues (Conference North and South) below, I don’t know. It’s out of my control and I don’t want to worry about it because that might change the way I lead from the front. “I need to be believing that we’ve got two thirds of the season left. That’s what I said to the players. “I told them don’t worry, just keep chipping away, keep that points total going, keep churning out performances because this season if it does finish is going to be a war of attrition for the amount of games we have to play. “We’ve got to be prepared and ready for that. “But we want to finish the season full stop. I’d like to think there’ll be quite a few who will want to as well. “I have spoken to a few other managers in passing and that seems to be the attitude of most. As always, the integrity of the competition needs to be right. “I’m sure there will be a few down the bottom that want it to end and that’s always the way. But hopefully everybody will will try and finish the season because it’s the right thing to do if it’s safe. “I know there has been talk of PPG if it does end, but we’ve played less than half a season. It would be ridiculous. “It’s just not something I can see happening.” At a time when many have argued this is the toughest period of lockdown yet, it is not just the balance sheets that clubs have to be mindful of when it comes to their decision making. There are many fans like Adrian who see football as an escape especially while the country remains wrapped in the chains of Covid-19. from https://taxi.nearme.host/notts-county-promotion-dream-in-the-balance-as-the-uncertain-show-goes-on-for-now-nottinghamshire-live/ It’s more important than ever to stay informed – Get free LeicestershireLive alerts direct to your inbox

Many UK supermarkets banned people from their stores earlier this month who were not wearing a mask without an exemption card. Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainbury’s and Waitrose are among those which put the ban in place. However, there are exceptions to the rule, and some people with a medical condition are exempt, report The Mirror. The government currently says you don’t have to wear a covering if you have “a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability” and would experience “severe distress” from doing so. This includes: To eat, drink or take medication If you are travelling with someone who requires lip-reading or reading facial expressions, wearing a mask will not be compulsory. The new rule will not apply to retail staff, but will apply to all members of the public. Children under 11 are also exempt. What is the face mask exemption card? The Government says you will not be asked to show written evidence if you’re not wearing a face mask – with supermarkets and shops urged to be mindful towards those who may have special circumstances. However, exemption cards and badges are available if you’re worried about being stopped. This is a personal choice, and is not necessary in law. It’s in the form of an e-document that you can save on your phone. The charity Hidden Disabilities has also created a face mask exemption card for anyone with the right requirements to be exempt from the law. This card simply indicates that you have a hidden disability, illness or impairment and have a reasonable excuse not to wear a face-covering. The card costs 55p, but could provide you with the peace of mind in case you are stopped. It can also make individuals feel better knowing they have something to show, if needed, a reason as to why they are not wearing a mask. “Businesses who are members of the scheme are aware of our card and provide support, help, assistance or simply a little more time to those wearing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower,” the Hidden Disabilities website explains. “However, please note that shops and public transport can still refuse you entry if you are not wearing a face covering.” from https://taxi.nearme.host/who-qualifies-for-a-face-mask-exemption-card-and-how-you-can-get-one-leicestershire-live/

Notts County moved into the National League’s top seven as they beat Solihull Moors 2-0 at Meadow Lane. Kyle Wootton struck the opener in the second half when he was teed up by Enzio Boldewijn after Dion Kelly-Evans crashed the bar from distance. And the former Scunthorpe forward was at it again three minutes from time when he tapped in after brilliant work from substitutes Jimmy Knowles and Ruben Rodrigues. Magpies writer Leigh Curtis was at Meadow Lane and here are his player ratings from tonight’s game. Sam Slocombe: Handling and positioning was very good as you would expect from such an experienced goalkeeper. Had to be alert to stop James Ball’s chance in the first half although it was straight at him. 7 Dion Kelly-Evans: Full-back showed tremendous energy throughout and his pace rescued him to thwart a dangerous chance for the visitors in the first half. Caught the eye with a fierce drive that hit the bar. 7 Connell Rawlinson: Managed the giant frame of Kyle Hudlin exceptionally well and was undoubtedly the best centre-back in terms of his distribution. One of the best centre-backs in the National League. 8 Alex Lacey: The defender cruised through this game and his partnership with Rawlinson was as solid as you would expect. Reads the game superbly and has been a superb addition to the squad. 8 Calvin Miller: One moment showed why he probably would prefer to be a winger more than a defender when he got caught napping, but his team-mates came to his rescue. Was excellent in the second half. 7 Enzio Boldewijn: Winger turned on the style for the first goal as he raced past two defenders before unselfishly squaring for Wootton to score the first. A massive contribution. 7 Michael Doyle: Nothing wrong with the captain’s distribution as he picked the right pass more often that not, and was absolutely superb in the holding midfield role. Sensational. 8 Jake Reeves: Had a free-kick which hit the first man in the first half which again underlined Notts’ lack of potency. Got booked for a cynical foul. Was better in the second half. 6 Jim O’Brien: Industry was there, but very little to aim as the strikers were flat-footed for large parts of the first half. Did plenty of hard work defensively as Moors threatened on the counter. 6 Inih Effiong: A very quiet night for the on-loan Stevenage forward who struggled to make any kind of dent in the visitors’ back four. Needed to show more incisiveness with his running. 5 Kyle Wootton: Like his strike partner, his best work came outside of the area in the first half. But was much more livelier after the break and grabbed himself two goals. 7 Ruben Rodrigues (O’Brien 68): The midfielder produced a bit of magic to tee up Wootton for the second goal which sealed the victory. 7 Jimmy Knowles (Effiong 68): Did brillantly in the build-up for the second goal which won the game for Notts. Showed tremendous energy when he came on. 7 The commenting system on NottinghamshireLive has undergone an overhaul and we want to get even closer to what you’re thinking by getting your comments and feedback on all of our stories, particularly where Forest debates are concerned. Let us know how you rated the players by having your say in the comments section below. from https://taxi.nearme.host/notts-county-vs-solihull-moors-player-ratings-doyle-masterclass-rawlinson-superb-nottinghamshire-live/ The populist online investor uprising to punish Wall Street traders by propping up shorted stocks hit a wall on Thursday when retail brokerage firm Robinhood announced that customers could, for now, sell but not buy eight turbulent securities. “In light of recent volatility, we are restricting transactions for certain securities to position closing only, including $AMC, $BB, $BBBY, $EXPR, $GME, $KOSS, $NAKD and $NOK,” the firm said in a blog post earlier today. Robinhood also said that it had increased the margin requirements for certain securities – the equity required to buy a stock with borrowed funds. The online brokerage appears even to be closing out certain positions for some of its customers without their permission, action specifically allowed under section 31 of Robinhood’s Customer Agreement [PDF]. Other online trading firms, such as Alpaca Securities, TD Ameritrade, Schwab, and Merrill Lynch, also restricted trading in this group of unusually active stocks. The forbidden symbols refer to: AMC Entertainment Holdings, BlackBerry, Express, GameStop, Koss Corporation, Naked Brand Groups, and Nokia Oyj. Earlier this week, online activists, amateur investors, and others weaponized shares in these companies for various reasons that amount to an insurgency against the financial establishment and the status quo. Hackers? Leap day? Nope, just plain old internet hysteria took down stock-trading-for-noobs app RobinHoodThe Reddit forum WallStreetBets, where the GameStop retail investor army mustered, briefly went private on Wednesday. Discord, a chat service, also shut down a separate but related WallStreetBets server for community guidelines violations, supposedly unrelated to overenthusiastic investing in moribund businesses. But WallStreetBets is once again public on Reddit – and Discord said a new chat server has been created, and it is helping moderators keep a grip on the discourse. We note that the GameStop stock fell from almost $470 per share around 1000 US Eastern Time to around $230 per share, with a brief stop at $492 per share at 1410 before dropping down to $193 a share at time of writing. Just as we were about to publish this article, Robinhood said in a new blog post it plans to allow people to buy the stocks again on Friday albeit with restrictions: Starting tomorrow, we plan to allow limited buys of these securities. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and may make adjustments as needed. To be clear, this was a risk-management decision, and was not made on the direction of the market makers we route to. We stand in support of our customers and the freedom of retail investors to shape their own financial future. Democratizing finance has been our guiding star since our earliest days. We will continue to build products that give more people—not fewer—access to our financial system. We’ll keep monitoring market conditions as we look to restore full trading for these securities. Despite the Bitcoin-style exhortations from various interested parties to “hold the line” and not sell – in order to keep share prices high, and totally screw the hedge funds that heavily shorted the stock – some people involved in the GameStop insurrection still complained about their potential losses due to Thursday’s stock sale restriction. The brokerage lockdown has prompted calls for an investigation by US House Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY 14), and saw possibly her first proposal to be endorsed by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), support that Ocasio-Cortez quickly rejected. “I am happy to work with Republicans on this issue where there’s common ground, but you almost had me murdered three weeks ago so you can sit this one out,” she said via Twitter, in reference to the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), meanwhile, proposed stronger intervention by regulators. For years, the same hedge funds … have treated the stock market like their own personal casino while everyone else pays the price “For years, the same hedge funds, private equity firms, and wealthy investors dismayed by the GameStop trades have treated the stock market like their own personal casino while everyone else pays the price,” said Warren in a statement on Thursday. “It’s long past time for the SEC and other financial regulators to wake up and do their jobs – and with a new administration and Democrats running Congress, I intend to make sure they do.” In a phone interview with The Register, Michael Purves, CEO of Tallbacken Capital Advisors, said there have been many investing manias before. “What’s different now is that we have these social media platforms that allow for instantaneous communication around the world and a high level of anonymity,” he said. Professional investment entities like hedge funds, he said, have ganged up to achieve specific goals. The situation with GameStop, he said, can be seen as a democratization of that sort of behavior. “A swarm of locusts can take down an antelope,” he said. “That seems to be what’s happening here.” What happens when the internet realizes the stock market is basically a casino? They go shopping at the MallPurves said the various brokerage firms taking action to limit trading can be seen as trying to cool the party down before the cops arrive. While he expects that these firms have legal cover to intervene through their terms-of-service agreements, which no one ever reads, he allowed that lawsuits may follow – as they have. Brendon Nelson, for one, has sued Robinhood in New York for breach of contract, acting in bad faith, and negligence. At the same time, he said, these firms might be exposed to even more litigation down the road if they failed to act. The fact that so many brokerages took action to limit trading looks a bit like they’re taking comfort in the herd, he said. “Probably their own risk management systems are going haywire,” Purves said, noting that there were over 1bn Nokia shares traded yesterday, compared to typical volume of around 60m shares. “That’s insane.” Purves suggested that the salient question is whether this is a blip or the new normal? “The question is, does the ganging up on a heavily shorted stock or a commodity become more of a source of returns,” he said. A Tallbacken research note provided to The Register, framed the issue in a slightly different way, asking whether the retail investor army (and its allied professional cadre) will continue to play a game of chicken with the hedge funds that have staked out short positions for days, weeks, longer still? And if this army tries to sustain itself, how will it hold together and how ready will it be to take losses? Seeing this only as a populist battle against the establishment ignores the fact that short seller targeted in this affair, Melvin Capital, was bailed out by other financial giants, Citadel LLC and Point72 Asset Management, which invested $2.75bn in the stricken hedge fun. In other words, it was an intra-establishment power move, too. A spokesperson for America’s financial watchdog – the Securities and Exchange Commission – was not available for immediate comment. ® from https://taxi.nearme.host/robinhood-plays-sheriff-of-nottingham-as-it-pauses-gamestop-amc-blackberry-etc-stock-sales-gets-sued-the-register/ Neal Ardley responds as Notts County boss quizzed over Callum Roberts Nottinghamshire Live1/29/2021

Neal Ardley admits he has “no idea” when Callum Roberts will be back for Notts County as the winger attempts to return from injury. The former Newcastle winger underwent surgery to strengthen his stomach lining as the club hoped to put an end to issues with inflammation in his groin and hip. But despite being back in rehabilitation, he is yet to return to full training with Notts eager to see the winger back in action having missed his creative spark. However, Ardley has refused to put a timescale on when Roberts may be available again. Asked when Notts could expect the former Blyth wideman to be back in action, Magpies boss Ardley said: “I’ve got no idea. “Honestly, I will tell you if I did. “It’s kind of two steps forward and one step back a little bit and vice versa. “The moment we start getting him on the training pitch, consistently training and we don’t have any issues at that time, then I’ll get my hopes up.” Roberts was a revelation for Notts last season after arriving from Blyth for a nominal fee and played an integral role as they reached the National League play-offs. He has played six games so far this term with his last appearance for the club coming in their sensational 3-2 win at Chesterfield back in November. The winger’s ability has had a detrimental impact on the goals for column this season which hasn’t been helped by Kristian Dennis’ exit to St Mirren in the summer, plus Wes Thomas’ unavailability. Ardley admitted that he is trying to find a way of improving Notts’ output in front of goals but admitted the trio have been a big miss considering the amount of goals they scored between them last term. “I look at everything that we’re trying to do and we want to try and get on a roll and start putting the ball in the back of the net more regularly,” he said. “That part of the game is something that we’ve worked really hard on the last few weeks. “But without having Wes (Thomas) all of the season without having Callum Roberts virtually all of the season and losing Kristian Dennis, you’re kind of taking 35 to 40 goals out of the team there. “And although we’ve signed some really good players, it would be remiss of me to expect them to come in and be banging in the same goals as those players I’ve mentioned. “That’s probably where we’re just trying to improve that area.” from https://taxi.nearme.host/neal-ardley-responds-as-notts-county-boss-quizzed-over-callum-roberts-nottinghamshire-live/ Sign up to get all the news from Mansfield in your inbox every day!

Almost 100 new council homes are in the pipeline in Mansfield as the council looks to spend more than £20 million on affordable homes. The homes will come as part of two separate developments totalling 99 council properties, aimed at both older people and families. One of the schemes will see the expansion of the Poppy Fields development at Centenary Road, with 77 homes built for older people and families. This project will cost around £14.8 million, and is the third and final phase of Mansfield District Council’s flagship council house project. The first two phases of the development, which brought 64 extra-care homes and 20 properties for older people, completed in 2016. Work on the third phase is expected to start in late 2021, with 29 ‘general needs’ homes and apartments, and 48 apartments or bungalows for older people. The second project of social homes is on the Bellamy Road estate, where Mansfield District Council plan to knock down shops and flats off Egmanton Road in favour of 22 homes and a ‘village green’. The council has set a budget of £5.7 million for the Bellamy Road development. Final approval for the funding of the schemes will be taken by the councillors during the full council meeting on January 27. Councillor Marion Bradshaw, portfolio holder for safer communities, housing and wellbeing, said: “These are significant schemes which we are very proud of and will deliver a variety of much needed affordable new council housing for both families and older people. “In particular, one of them will help address a district-wide shortage of two-bedroom bungalows. “Among the themes of this strategies are targets to develop a better and wider mix of housing across the district. “All the homes will be built to a higher specification than is currently required to future proof them for expected new housing standards and make them flexible living spaces that can adapt to tenants’ changing needs over their lifetime. “They will not only offer an excellent quality of the life for the tenants who will live in these new homes, but deliver improvements that will benefit the wider neighbourhoods around these schemes, too. “The construction of them will also provide work and supply chain opportunities for local people and businesses at a time when we need to support our local economy as much as possible in the midst of the terrible effects of the coronavirus pandemic.” All the homes will be offered for affordable rents and will be owned and managed by Mansfield District Council. from https://taxi.nearme.host/projects-to-build-almost-100-council-homes-unveiled-in-mansfield-nottinghamshire-live/ It’s more important than ever to stay informed – Get free LeicestershireLive alerts direct to your inbox

FREDDIE WOODMAN 7 Didn’t have a save to make in the opening half and did fairly well after the restart. Not much he could do about the goal. JOEL LATIBEAUDIERE 7 Made plenty of clearances and impressed in the opening half. A slight wobble after the restart but ended strongly. RYAN BENNETT 9 On his return from injury, Bennett commanded things at the back and made stacks of clearances to ensure Woodman had a comfortable afternoon. Two great blocks after the restart as Forest pushed. Colossus of a man. MARC GUEHI 8 Made a few clearances and looked typically comfortable in possession too. Could have conceded a penalty before Anthony Knockaert’s goal and was subbed late on. CONNOR ROBERTS 8 Had a really enjoyable afternoon and was unfortunate not to get himself a goal before half-time. Taken off late on as Swansea saw out the game. CONOR HOURIHANE 8 Quality from set-pieces was hugely impressive, and the Aston Villa man wasted no time in showing how good an acquisition he is. MATT GRIMES 9 In a deep-lying midfield role, Grimes gave the back three plenty of cover and made it 2-0 with a stunning strike from distance. Cool from the penalty spot too before being subbed. Wonderful display. RYAN MANNING 8 Offered a real threat on the left flank and made plenty of interceptions when it came to defending. Made a string of vital tackles and blocks in the second half too. Great assist for Cullen’s second. A really good shift. YAN DHANDA 8 Had some really good flashes in the final third in truth. The others took the limelight, but he can be happy with his efforts. LIAM CULLEN – Star Man 9 Coolly volleyed home his first goal of the campaign to put Swansea ahead and took his second goal well too. A fine performance before being withdrawn through injury. Here’s hoping it’s not too serious. WAYNE ROUTLEDGE 6 A wonderful cross that led to Swansea’s opener, but he was forced off through injury not too long after. Jamal Lowe (for Routledge) – Spurned a fine chance moments after coming on, but complimented Swansea’s attacking options well. 6 Ollie Cooper (for Hourihane) – First senior goal for Swansea to cap off a fine win! 7 Jay Fulton (for Grimes) – Helped to see out the game. 6 Jake Bidwell (for Guehi) – As above. 6 Jordon Garrick (for Roberts) – Good work at both ends of the pitch as Swansea saw out the game. 6 from https://taxi.nearme.host/the-stunning-swansea-city-player-ratings-as-duo-dazzle-bennett-looks-unbeatable-and-aston-villa-loan-man-oozes-class-in-nottingham-forest-win-wales-online/ |
